ATTACK THE BLOCK is a John Boyega B-side. He got the lead role after an open online audition, and is best known for his portrayal of Finn in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. Boyega plays Moses, the ringleader of a small-time South London gang that accidentally involves itself with an alien invasion. ATTACK THE BLOCK is a funny, cool-looking horror comedy with several memorable characters. I usually steer away from horror movies if I can help it and didn't realize this film's genre before I started it, but writer/director Joe Cornish was able to stay self-aware enough to employ certain monster movie tropes without getting bogged down with most of the genre's trappings.

The South London accent left me confused a number of times, sometimes to the point where I wasn't able to understand what the characters were saying at all, but the gang's vernacular was quickly infectious. I feel like I'm going to catch myself saying "believe" and "trust" after I tell people something - and Moses's "allow it" is pure badassery. I highly recommend ATTACK THE BLOCK if you're looking for a fun movie and you want to watch a long-haired Nick Frost skulk around a grow op.
